เทศกาลละครกรุงเทพเป็นมหกรรมทางศิลปะการแสดงร่วมสมัยหลักของประเทศไทยที่มีจำนวนศิลปิน ผลงานละคร

และผู้ชมมากที่สุด เริ่มครั้งแรกในปี 2545 จากความร่วมมือสร้างสรรค์ของประชาคมบางลำพู เครือข่ายละครกรุงเทพ และพันธมิตรอื่นๆ เพื่อให้ศิลปิน ผู้ชม ครูอาจารย์ นักศึกษา นักวิจารณ์ สื่อมวลชน และผู้มีใจรักละครเวที

ได้พบปะสังสรรค์ กระชับความสัมพันธ์ ทั้งยังเป็นพื้นที่สำหรับศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ๆ ให้ได้แสดงงานต่อสาธารณะ

ทั้งยังสร้างวัฒนธรรมการชื่นชมศิลปะการละครร่วมสมัย โดยจัดต่อเนื่องมาเป็นประจำในเดือนพฤศจิกายนของทุกปี

 

ระยะ 10 ปีแรกมีศูนย์กลางการจัดงานที่สวนสันติชัยปราการ และร้านรวงในย่านบางลำพู จนขยายมาสู่ร้านอาหาร

หอศิลป์ โรงละครขนาดเล็กในย่านอื่น ๆ ตั้งแต่ปี 2555 ได้ขยายมาที่หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร

 

นับแต่ปี 2558 ด้วยความพร้อมและปัจจัยที่เปลี่ยนแปรไปตามสภาพและสภาวการณ์ของละครร่วมสมัย

ผู้จัดฯ จึงย้ายศูนย์กลางของงานมาที่หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานครและกระจายพื้นที่ของเทศกาลไปยังโรงละครใหญ่น้อยทั่วกรุงเทพที่เชื่อมโยงด้วยเส้นทางรถไฟฟ้า ตอบรับวิถีการดูละครของผู้ชมที่ขยายวงมากขึ้น

รวมทั้งสนับสนุนการเติบโตของโรงละครขนาดเล็กทั่วทั้งกรุงเทพ

 

วัตถุประสงค์

1. เพื่อสร้างกระแสให้ผู้ชมทั่วไปหันมา สนใจ และร่วมสนับสนุนกิจกรรมละครเวทีมากขึ้น

2. เพื่อส่งเสริมกลุ่มคนทำงานหน้าใหม่ๆได้เปิดตัวต่อผู้ชมและสนับสนุนให้กลุ่มคนทำงานเดิมได้สร้างสรรค์และ    นำเสนอผลงานละครเวทีได้ต่อเนื่องสม่ำเสมอ

3. เพื่อพัฒนาเครือข่ายคนละครเวทีไทยให้เข้มแข็งขึ้น สู่ความยั่งยืนในอนาคต

Bangkok Theatre Festival is a grand contemporary theatre event of Thailand with the greatest number of artists, works, and audience.

The first festival took place in 2002 with the cooperation from the Bang Lampoo community, the Bangkok Theatre Network and other entities as a shared space for artists, audience, teachers, students, critics, the media and theatre aficionados to meet and bond, as well as for emerging theatre groups to showcase their work to the public, while also strengthening the culture of contemporary theatre appreciation.

The festival has been held regularly in November of every year. During the first 10 years, the central venue was in Santi Chaiprakarn Park and nearby stores in Bang Lampoo.

It later expanded to other small scale theatres and arts centre in other districts. In 2012, some plays has been moved to the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC). From 2015 onwards, due to the changing circumstances of the theatre scene, the organizers have moved the central venue to the BACC, while staging festival plays to a number of venues along the BTS and MRT line, in response to the increasing number of audience and emerging small scale theatre houses.

1. To create awareness and interest in theatre among the public, and gain public support

2. To provide support and space for new practitioners to showcase their work, and for old practitioners to produce and perform new works on a regular basis

3. To develop and strengthen the network of theatre practitioners for future sustainability
