Step into the immersive world of "Can you sing the National Anthem?," a compelling participatory production by Malongdu Theatre, featured at the Bangkok Theatre Festival 2023. This thought-provoking play invites you to join a collaborative journey, inspired by real-life experiences and portrayed by an international cast of Burmese laborers.

Prepare to be transported into the lives of these foreign laborers as they grapple with the challenges of being second-class citizens in a neighboring country. Shaped by a history that has often labeled them as "Bloodshed Warriors," they were once considered the archenemies of the Siamese people. Fast forward to today, they have transformed into laborers in Thailand, fleeing the horrors of a civil war which Thailand is seen as sympathizer of the Burmese government.

 

Although they are around us, they have become the silent citizens, toiling for meager wages, enduring the exploitation of the Thai state, Thai capitalists, and ordinary Thai citizens who find them amusing when they attempt to speak the Thai language with their distinctive accents.
"Can you sing the National Anthem?," is a powerful exploration of the untold stories of these laborers, highlighting their resilience and the harsh realities they face in their adopted homeland. Through participatory and interactive performances, the forum play sheds light on the complexities of their existence, the challenges they confront, and the dreams they hold and offers the chance for spect-actor to make changes to the ending of the play and collectively imagine a better world with less oppression.
