Our third production this season will be an original theatrical piece titled "Hollow", devised and performed by Peel the Limelight. In English with Thai surtitles. "Hollow" recounts the history of the hundred of thousands of women, commonly referred to as “comfort women”, who were forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese Imperial Army before and during World War II. "COMFORT WOMEN" The Japanese government facilitated and funded a state sanctioned system of military brothels across the Asia Pacific theatre before and during World War II, so-called “comfort stations”. It is estimated that between 100,000 and 300,000 women were abducted and enslaved by this program but exact numbers are still a matter of research and debate. Most of the women were from Korea, China and the Philippines, although Malay, Taiwanese, Dutch and Australian nationals were also involved. The majority did not survive World War II and according to author, journalist and documentary maker Griselda Molemans, “The system of Japanese forced prostitution claimed victims of at least 26 nationalities.” AN ORIGINAL WORK BY PEEL THE LIMELIGHT “Hollow” is inspired by the testimonies of the survivors and based on documentary evidence of the systematic abduction, rape, torture and abuse they suffered. It explores the legacy of these women and their transcendent strength to endure one of the darkest episodes of the 20th century. In a world where the remaining survivors still wait for an apology, what does it say about justice?
