หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร ได้มีโอกาสร่วมงานกับเครือข่ายละครกรุงเทพฯ ในเทศกาลละครกรุงเทพฯ มาตั้งแต่ปี 2555 ในครั้งนั้นมีการแสดงเรื่องหนึ่งในเทศกาลมาจัดที่นี่ และในปีต่อมาเทศกาลก็ได้ย้ายสถานที่จัดงานหลักมาอยู่ที่นี่เรื่อยมาจนปัจจุบัน โดยเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของเทศกาลศิลปะการแสดง (Performative Art Festival หรือ PAF) โครงการประจำปีที่สนับสนุนและส่งเสริมการสร้างสรรค์และจัดแสดงงานศิลปะการแสดงหลากหลายสาขาของหอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร
เมื่อครั้งที่กรุงเทพมหานครได้จัดสรรงบอุดหนุนการจัดกิจกรรมและนิทรรศการมาให้ เทศกาลศิลปะการแสดงก็ได้จัดสรรงบประมาณสนับสนุนการจัดเทศกาลละครกรุงเทพฯ ด้วย แต่เมื่อเกิดภาวะวิกฤตด้านงบประมาณซึ่งต่อเนื่องเรื้อรังมา2 ปีแล้ว เทศกาลศิลปะการแสดงจึงสามารถสนับสนุนได้เพียงสถานที่จัดงาน อุปกรณ์ และเจ้าหน้าที่เท่านั้น ทว่า สีสันของเทศกาลละครกรุงเทพฯ ก็ไม่ได้จืดจางลงไป ด้วยความมุ่งมั่นสร้างสรรค์ของผู้จัดเทศกาลและศิลปินผู้ร่วมเทศกาล ดังปรากฏในเทศกาลปีที่แล้ว นอกจากนั้นตลอดช่วงเวลา 2 ปีที่ผ่านมา หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานครก็ได้เปิดโอกาสและสนับสนุนให้ศิลปินเครือข่ายละครกรุงเทพฯ ได้ใช้พื้นที่ต่าง ๆ ฝึกซ้อมและนำเสนอการแสดง นอกช่วงเวลาของเทศกาลมากขึ้นอีกด้วย
ในนามของเทศกาลศิลปะการแสดงครั้งที่ 8 ของหอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร ผมขอขอบคุณและแสดงความยินดีกับเครือข่ายละครกรุงเทพฯ และศิลปินทุกท่านที่ได้มาร่วมสร้างสรรค์งานการแสดง ให้ความรู้ สร้างแรงบันดาลใจ กระตุ้นให้ผู้ชมฉุกคิด และแสดงความคิดเห็นในประเด็นต่าง ๆ ในเทศกาลละครกรุงเทพฯ ครั้งนี้ ผมขอยืนยันว่าหอศิลปวัฒนธรรมของประชาชนแห่งนี้จะดำรงความเป็น “พื้นที่เรียนรู้ผ่านศิลปะ” ที่เป็นกลาง เป็นของประชาชนทุกคน ไม่ใช่ของศิลปินกลุ่มไหน สาขาอะไร หรือสถาบันใด สนับสนุนการสร้างสรรค์และนำเสนองานศิลปะและวัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัย หลากหลายสาขา และหลายหลากความคิดและทัศนคติทางการเมืองและสังคม เพื่อสนับสนุนพัฒนาการของศิลปะร่วมสมัย ซึ่งเปิดโอกาสให้ประชาชนทุกคนมีส่วนร่วมอย่างเท่าเทียม ตามครรลองของระบอบประชาธิปไตยสืบไป

Message from Director of Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC)
BACC has been working with the Bangkok Theatre Network (BTN) in organizing the Bangkok Theatre Festival (BTF) since 2012, when a BTF production was staged here. That number grew multiple times in the following year when BTN moved the hub of BTF to this downtown multi-disciplinary arts centre. Since then, BTF has been an integral part of BACC’s Performative Art Festival (PAF), which supports creation and presentation of contemporary performance, in various styles and contents.
During the years when the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) supported BACC Foundation with grants to create and facilitate arts, cultural and educational activities, parts of those grants were allocated to many annual editions of BTF. During the ongoing budget crisis, which has lasted for two years now, PAF can only support the venue, equipment and personnel. Notwithstanding this difficulty, last year’s BTF was as vibrant as ever, thanks to BTN members’ creativity and dedication. Moreover, in the past two years, outside the frameworks of BTF and PAF, BACC has been able to give more support to BTN members with rehearsal rooms and venues than before.
On behalf of BACC’s PAF, I hereby thank and congratulate BTN and all BTF artists whose diverse performances are not merely the audience but also inspiring and provoking them as they express different opinions on a number of social, political and economic issues. I also reaffirm that BACC will remain a “learning space through arts” for the people and never belongs to any certain group of artists from any arts discipline or institution. The main mission to support the creation and facilitation of a variety of arts, cultural and educational activities, filled with different, or even opposing, social and political views, remain firmly intact, to sustain the development of contemporary arts which assures the public’s equal access as in any democratic society.

ท่ามกลางความผันแปรของเศรษฐกิจและการเมืองในช่วงเวลาเปลี่ยนผ่านนี้ ละครเวทีโรงเล็กยังคงเคลื่อนไหวอยู่นอกกระแสอย่างเงียบๆ รอบปีที่ผ่านมามีโรงละครขนาดเล็กที่ผลิตรายการของตนเองสู่ผู้ชมอย่างต่อเนื่องอยู่เพียง2-3 แห่ง คือ Sliding Elbow Studio ซอยศูนย์วิจัย 2และCreative Industries ถนนเพชรบุรี ซึ่งดำเนินการโดยกลุ่มนักละครเอง และสตูดิโอชั้นสี่ หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร ซึ่งเป็นองค์กรกึ่งรัฐฯ ยังมีโรงละครที่ให้เช่าจัดแสดง เช่น ศูนย์ศิลปะวัฒนธรรมแสงอรุณ ที่กลับมามีชีวิตชีวาอีกครั้ง ห้องสตูดิโอและแบล็คบอกซ์ของโรงละครสยามพิฆเนศ ครีเอธีฟอินดัสตรีส์ สตูดิโอ โรงละครบลูบอกซ์ ในอาคารเอ็มเธียเตอร์ นอกจากนั้นยังมีสถานที่อื่นๆ อย่างร้านหนังสือ ร้านกาแฟ แกลเลอรี่ ที่ถูกปรับเป็นโรงละครขนาดเล็กชั่วคราวกระจายอยู่ทั่วกรุงเทพฯ ซึ่งนอกจากจำนวนสถานที่จะลดลงแล้ว จำนวนชิ้นงานที่ศิลปินที่จัดแสดงในรอบปีที่ผ่านมาก็ลดลงเช่นกัน ส่วนจะเป็นเพราะอะไรคงต้องศึกษาวิเคราะห์กันต่อไป
อย่างไรก็ตามเทศกาลละครกรุงเทพก็ยังคงมีอยู่ แม้จะต้องปรับตัวให้สอดรับกับสภาวะต่างๆ ที่ผันแปรไปก็ตาม ในปีนี้ภายใต้แนวความคิดTheatre Farmที่เปรียบเสมือนเทศกาลนี้เป็นแหล่งเพาะพันธุ์นักการละครให้เติบโตในแบบที่เขาเป็น เข้มแข็งงดงามตามธรรมชาติของเขา ตามความถนัด ตามความสนใจ ดังนั้นความหลากหลายของชิ้นงานของศิลปินคละรุ่นยังคงเป็นบุคลิกสำคัญของเทศกาลอายุ17ปีนี้ BACC ยังคงเป็นศูนย์กลางของการจัดงานแต่ลดปริมาณชิ้นงานลงเพื่อให้ผู้ชมกระจายไปพบบรรยากาศใหม่ๆ กับงานละครในพื้นที่แสดงใหม่ๆ ได้มากขึ้น
ถ้าเปรียบแปลงเกษตรและคอกสัตว์เป็นแหล่งผลิตอาหารเพื่อหล่อเลี้ยงร่างกายมนุษย์ เทศกาลละครกรุงเทพก็น่าจะเปรียบได้กับฟาร์มผลิตศิลปะการแสดงเพื่อหล่อเลี้ยงจิตวิญญาณของเรา 1-17พฤศจิกายนนี้ ขอเชิญชวนก้าวออกจากบ้านไปสัมผัสบรรยากาศและรสชาติอันหลากหลายของละครร่วมสมัยในโรงขนาดเล็กเพื่อเติมเต็มร่างกายและจิตวิญญาณกันเถิดครับ

Message from the festival director, and chairman of the Bangkok Theatre Network
Bangkok Theatre Festival 2019: Theatre Farm, the fields and farms of theatre lovers
Amidst the volatile economy and political turmoil, alternative theatre remains humbly active in its own alternate tide.
During this past year, there were a few spaces that still regularly produced work: Sliding Elbow Studio and Creative Industries (individually run by artists), and 4thfloor studio of Bangkok Art and Cultural Center (BACC), which is a state-owned enterprise. There are also venues with available space for rent: the recently revived Saeng-Arun Art And Culture Center, the Studio Room and the Black Box studio of Siam Pic-Ganesha, Creative Industries, Blue Box Studio in M Theatre building, in addition to unconventional spaces such as bookstores, cafés and galleries that have been transformed into temporary performing spaces around Bangkok.
Beside the decrease in terms of available performance venues, the number of performances is decreasing too. The cause remains to be studied and analyzed.
Despite such setbacks, Bangkok Theatre Festival aims to bounce back, albeit with some adjustments to be able to adapt to these changes. This year, the festival’s concept of ‘Theatre Farm' offers places of sanctuary that nurture each theatre artist to grow in their own ways, expertise and interests. The diversity of works by artists from various generations will still be our main characteristic for this 17 year-old festival. Although BACC is still acting as our hub, it will host fewer productions, so that the audience can venture out to explore new atmospheres and performances in innovative spaces.
Just like fields and farms that produce food to sustain and nourish the human body, theatre can be viewed as fields and farms that produce food to sustain and nourish the human spirit. This November, we gladly invite you to take a step out to taste and experience the various tastes of contemporary theatre to fulfill your body and soul.
